Questions and Concerns About Breastfeeding
1. It will embarass me.
Breastfeeding doesn't have to be embarassingl, you can learn to nurse so that no one sees anything. You can wear a t-shirt or top that pulls up from the waist, just high enough to let the baby in and not have any skin show. Or, you can throw a light blanket or shawl over your shoulder.
2. My Mother and Grandmother didn't breastfeed.
Maybe they didn't know all of the benefits of breast feeding! The truth is, breastfed babies suffer fewer earaches, and allergies. Once you are convinced of the health benefits, just stick to your decision and don't let family members talk you out of it.
3. It will hurt.
Breastfeeding does NOT hurt if you get your baby "latched on" to your breast correctly. Take a breastfeeding class and find out how to do it right.
4. I'll be going back to work.
Breastfeeding is still an option when you return to work or school. You can pump or express your milk and put it in a bottle so that someone else can feed your baby YOUR milk while you're away.
5. It will be such a bother.
Actually, breastfeeding is much more convenient than bottle feeding. It is always ready and always the right temperature. You don't have to fuss with equipment or with mixing, warming, or chilling formula. Breast milk is ready the instant your baby is hungry.
6. I'll have to drink milk.
You don't have to drink milk to produce milk. The reason to drink milk is to meet your daily need for calcium, but you can meet that by eating cheese, yogurt and other high calcium foods.
